I wanted to share my experience with other people with receding hairlines. My hair has been falling / thinning since I was about 25 years old (now I am 47 years). I tried out various oils, gels, tablets and a host of similar products, without any significant improvement.
I have been following the net for about a decade for available therapies. Finally I homed on to hair transplant. After having searched for doctors who undertake this procedure, I short listed and visited two of them. The first of the renowned doctors recommended the strip procedure. Though the procedure was cheaper, it would have left a huge permanent scar and would have further depleted the already scanty hair on my scalp. The second doctor (Dr Arvind Poswal), seeing ample supply of hair on my body, recommended transplanting my body hair. He assured me that there would be minimal scarring at the donor area, which would gradually reduce in about six month’s time. I also saw a few ‘before and after’ photographs at his clinic.
The procedure being expensive, coupled with my quality of not getting convinced easily, I decided to go in for a limited transplant of 700 body hair initially. I wanted to see the results before investing considerable money in the procedure. In consultation with the doctor, we decided to put grafts on the front area of the head. The reason for deciding on this area was that it should give maximum impact without looking inappropriate. We decided to extract hair from the chest area since I had abundance of dark black hair available. The average length of the hair on the chest area was about one inch. The procedure was done in end Sep 05. The procedure started in the morning at about 10.30 AM and was completed by 5.30 PM, with a lunch break in between of about 45 mins. Hairs were extracted from my chest area, which I had shaved off a week before. I was given local anesthesia around the donor area. I walked off from the clinic in the evening with bandages on my chest as well as my forehead.
Two days later, I took off the bandages on my own. There were a large number of tiny scars / crusts on my head and the chest. There was a little bit of swelling on the forehead, which gradually vanished over the next few days. The crusts also fell off in the next 10 – 20 days, leaving behind tiny bright red marks. I wondered if they would ever heal and would the skin ever look flawless.
Over the next one month, most of the transplanted hair fell off and only about 25 – 30 % remained. By this time, I was not very confident that they would ever sprout back. The bright red cars on my chest were also looking lighter in colour.
But over the next couple of months, gradually but surely, most of the hair started growing. The growth was more on the right side as compared to the left side. I presume that this was happening due to the fact that thicker hair that were harvested from the chest, were transplanted on the right side. The shaved hair on my chest also grew back considerably, during this time.
Now, in May 06, some hairs have grown more than two inches while others hair have sprouted recently and are 3-4 millimeters in length. The scars, to my surprise, are no longer there.
Seeing the progress, I now intend to go in for 4000 – 5000 more hair transplants, after two months. The doctor has assured me that it will be possible to complete the grafting of 5000 hair in four days. We plan to use hair from the chest, armpits, thighs as well as the back area. I hope that my loss of confidence and low self esteem on account of a bald head will soon vanish and I am looking forward to much brighter days ahead. I will keep sharing my progress with fellow netizens.
